Kayaking or SUP with your dog? This is how you do it!
Guides
Want to take your dog out on the water at Dobber? That is certainly possible! Whether you opt for a kayak or a SUP, bobbing with your four-legged friend is an unforgettable experience. But what is the best way to do that? With the right preparation and a little patience, it will be a great trip for you and your dog. Here are some essential tips for you.
Go supping with your dog
Stand-Up Paddleboarding with your dog is a fun way to relax on the water together. Because you're standing on a wide board, your dog has plenty of space to sit or lie down.
Here are some tips for paddling safely and comfortably with your dog:
Practice on dry land first: let your dog get used to the SUP board by letting him or her sit on the side first.
Provide a dog life jacket: even good swimmers like dogs can get tired.
Organize your paddling trip properly: start your trip with a few short sessions on calm water to give your dog confidence.
Reward good behavior: a classic, of course, but bring snacks to encourage your dog to go on the board.
Kayaking with your dog
Kayaking with your dog offers more stability and space than a SUP. This is perfect if your dog likes to sit next to you while you enjoy the view together. Here are some helpful tips for kayaking with your dog:
Take an open kayak: in an open kayak, your dog has plenty of room to move around. Our Dobber tour kayaks are all open.
Practice on land first: let your dog get used to the kayak and boarding on dry land.
If necessary, bring an anti-slip mat: this way, your dog does not slip when moving.
More tips for getting into the water with your dog
Here are some general tips for water activities with your dog.
Check the rules about taking animals out on the water: At most Dobber locations, it is in principle allowed to bring your dog, an exception may apply here and there.
See how animal-friendly the paddling route is: some paddle routes are a bit busier than others, at a number of locations such as the Leie in Latem and the Ghent City Center you occasionally end up on places with a lot of pleasure boating or yachting. If you know that this can make your dog restless, it is best to plan a different route.
Bring water and snacks: hydration is important, especially on hot days.
Stay calm and relaxed: your dog senses your energy, so don't get nervous so you can have a relaxing experience.
What's the best choice for your dog?
Does your dog have a lot of energy, is he an avid swimmer and is he not afraid of a challenge? Then a SUP is a great option for a sporty outing on the water.
Does your dog prefer a relaxed spectator? Then a kayak is more appropriate. There is guaranteed space for your four-legged friend in Dobber's boats, so what are you waiting for?
